The EU responsible person for products sold into Europe
A product can only be placed on the EU market if an economic operator established in the Union is responsible for compliance tasks. We act as responsible person from Brussels.
Scope
You are in scope if
- You sell physical products to customers in the EU, directly or through an online marketplace
- You have no economic operator established in the Union already carrying out the compliance tasks

What the responsible person does
- Verifies that the EU declaration of conformity or the declaration of performance and the technical documentation have been drawn up, and keeps them at the disposal of authorities
- Provides authorities, on reasoned request, with the information and documentation necessary to demonstrate conformity, in a language they can understand
- Informs authorities where there is reason to believe that a product presents a risk
- Cooperates on any corrective action taken to remedy non-compliance
What we do not do
- We do not become your importer. If you already have an EU importer, that operator may already carry these tasks — which is the first thing we check.
- We do not test, certify or inspect your products.
- We do not draw up your technical documentation or your declaration of conformity. We verify that they exist and keep them available to authorities.
- We do not accept a mandate over a product range we have not reviewed.
What the rule requires
A product may be placed on the Union market only where there is an economic operator established in the Union responsible for the compliance tasks set out in Article 4(3) of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, and the General Product Safety Regulation carries the same logic across to consumer products generally. The name, registered trade name or trade mark and contact details of that operator must appear on the product, on its packaging, on the parcel or in an accompanying document.
In practice, online marketplaces enforce this at listing level. Sellers without a valid EU responsible person find their listings blocked before any authority is involved.
